I think I was the only child that wanted to be a bank manager when they grew up!! In high school I went on my work experience to Natwest Bank and thoroughly enjoyed it. I set my sights on a degree in Banking, Insurance and Finance which would allow me to fast track on a graduate scheme with the bank. While studying for my degree at Bangor University I learnt that there was a lot more to the Financial Service Industry than just banking. I realised then that independent advice was critical to being able to access the most suitable products and funds. I left University with Independent Financial Adviser as my target. The journey was not quite that easy but it never is.
I started to approach existing IFAs looking for a trainee role. Everywhere I turned I had a lack of sales experience and I didn’t have my Certificate in Financial Planning. I focussed on how to get my Cert PFS. This opportunity soon presented itself by way of a graduate fast track offered by Royal London to then sit on their historic business review team. This is where I met Big John, one of the Consultants working with HBR he taught me so much and on my last day he presented me with a poem ‘An Ode to an English Rose’
I left Royal London to work in an IFA practise in Poulton producing technical reports and PA to the Managing Director. It was a real eye opener as to how the IFA world worked, compliance, advice process and client interaction. After a few years I needed to move to a job closer to home as I was expecting my first baby. I started work for United Friendly. Eventually progressing to Trainee IFA in 2005. I was nearly there!!!
In 2010 I took the leap and English Rose Financial Planning was formed. My business, my way and I’ve never looked back. Building my knowledge, experience and support team.
I may not be your standard IFA. Heck I don’t even wear a suit but I know my stuff and have dealt with many varying needs over the years. Having to think outside the box on many occasions to come up with a solution. Thankfully not all my clients are so challenging!!
Outside of work my family are so very important to me. I have 4 children – Daniel (16), Adam (14), Matthew (6) and Anna (5). I am the Group Scout Leader for Eccleston and run the Beaver Scout Colony (ages 6 -8) and to top it all off this year (2019) I am also taking on a huge personal challenge of the Lakeland 50 – yes run/walking 50 miles in the lakes in 24 hours (although I am hoping for 18 hours)
